Identifying and Preventing Garden Pests

A thriving garden is the perfect oasis for bugs. If you notice holes beginning to form in your leaves or partially eaten fruits and vegetables appear in your garden, this could be a strong indicator of pests. Understanding which pests are nibbling at your plants can help you determine what to do to prevent these bugs from harming your garden and which bugs benefit your garden.

Common Garden Bugs

Aphids

One of the most common garden bugs is aphids. Aphids are tiny, pear-shaped insects that feed off of the sap from plants. This causes the leaves on your plant to become distorted and yellow. Consider spraying neem oil, boric acid, or castile soap on the affected area or introducing ladybugs into your garden.

Caterpillars or Cabbage Worms

Caterpillars can cause damage to your garden plants as they chew on leaves and defoliation. The best way to get rid of these pests is to hand-pick them and relocate them away from your garden. You can also employ row covers if these pests persist.

Slugs and Snails

Slugs and snails leave irregular holes in leaves, particularly ones in damp conditions. One of the most common ways to get rid of slugs and snails is by setting up a beer trap. Simply add beer into a plastic cup or container. The beer should be at least 3 inches deep. Bury the cups around the perimeter of your garden, leaving the rim out of the soil. Slugs and snails will be attracted to the smell of the beer and will get trapped in your cup, preventing them from escaping.

Spider Mites

Spider mites can cause discoloration and sucking damage to your leaves. These tiny bugs can be sprayed with neem oil, boric acid, or castile soap. It can also be helpful to check the humidity levels of your plants and ensure that they aren’t getting overwatered, as this can attract pests like spider mites.

Preventative Measures

Biodiversity

It can be helpful to plant herbs and flowers that can work as natural deterrents against harmful garden pests. Some of these plants include marigolds, petunias, dill, fennel, lavender, and chrysanthemums.

Regular Inspection

Keep a close eye on your plants, checking the undersides of leaves and soil regularly. Detecting any harmful pests early on can help protect your garden. Remember that some bugs benefit your garden, such as spiders, bees, ladybugs, centipedes, and even some beetles.

Barriers

One of the most effective ways to keep bugs and other animals away from plants is by using floating row covers. Floating row covers are either light or transparent cover that allows sunshine to come in but keeps bugs out.

Identifying which bugs are in your garden can help you know which preventative measures you need to take. It is important to remember that a thriving garden consists of both plants and beneficial insects. However, it is important to keep your garden safe from harmful bugs and other pests.
