Identifying Flying Cockroaches In Dallas + Tips on Prevention

If you thought finding a cockroach in the corner of your living room was bad enough, wait until it spreads its wings and flies! The typical household pest has a tricky subspecies with the ability to fly, and they are quite common in the Dallas area. By the end of this post, you should be able to identify all the different types of these pests and use some tips and tricks to control them.

The American Cockroach

This species can be identified by its large, reddish-brown body and wings extending beyond its abdomen. Although they aren’t the best fliers, they can be seen gliding around during the warmer summer months. Like other cockroach species, they eat anything and everything you leave out.

The Australian Cockroach

This species is very similar to the American cockroach but with just two slight differences. One is that their wings have a thin yellow band on the very edge of them. The other is that they are excellent fliers. However, they still prefer to fly in the warm summer months and love to hang out in the dark, uninhabited corners of your home.

The Smokey Brown Cockroach

These fliers usually appear to have a shiny dark brown or black body color with smaller wings. This species is also slightly smaller than an American or Australian cockroach. These little buggers love to come out at night and will terrorize your porch lights when given the chance.

How to manage them

These flying roaches may seem unbeatable most of the time, but they aren’t immortal. Here are three effective measures to eradicate them from your home.

  • Control your home’s moisture: It is essential to fix and check for any leaks. Cockroaches love the humidity they provide. Ensure that your home is also well-ventilated. This will keep moisture from your bathrooms or kitchens at bay by allowing lots of air to pass through.
  • Keep a clean house: Like any other pest, cockroaches love to scavenge for food inside and around your home. Make sure your food containers are sealed properly, and clean up any spills or crumbs left out around the area.
  • Manage your outdoor space: Minimize any outdoor lighting by using yellow or sodium vapor lights, which are not very attractive to cockroaches. Make sure to tidy up your yard as well. Clearing away any rotting vegetation, trimming your grass, and eliminating any standing water will discourage breeding sites.
