Mosquito-Borne Diseases In Federal Way And How You Can Prevent Them

Mosquito

There is a lot of information buzzing around about the many hazards of mosquitoes such as the potential diseases they can carry. In other parts of the world, these pests can spread things such as malaria, Dengue fever, The Zika virus, and many other diseases that are life-altering and often, life-threatening. For Federal Way, however, most of these unsavory afflictions are extremely uncommon. That being said, there are still a few things you should watch out for and some preventative measures you can take to keep your home and family safe.

1. Allergic Reactions:

Ah yes! The classic red welts or bumps that tend to mysteriously appear after a long day spent outside in this hot, humid weather. Big or small, these itchy bites can be a pain to deal with but aren’t usually very dangerous. However, if you notice your bite becomes larger, darker in color, or feels hot even after a few days, you could have an infection and should consult a doctor immediately.

2. West Nile Virus (WNV):

While there was a small outbreak that occurred last summer in Colorado that affected close to 650 people, only a very small fraction of those people passed away. Most infected with it won’t even develop symptoms; only about 20% may experience fever, headaches, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes a rash. Overall, this virus is extremely uncommon, but If you notice any of these symptoms and they get worse over time, Get yourself to a hospital STAT.

3. Heartworm in Pets:

Mosquitoes can also transmit heartworm larvae to dogs and cats through their bites. If left untreated, heartworm disease can lead to severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs in pets. If you notice your furry friend coughing persistently, is less energetic, experiences rapid weight loss or gain, or has a swollen belly, take them to a vet.

So, what can you do to avoid these nasty pests?

  • Use Insect Repellent: It’s a good idea to look for and apply EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to exposed skin when spending time outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are the most active.
  • Wear Protective Clothing: If you want to go the extra mile, Cover your exposed skin by wearing long sleeves, long pants, socks, and closed-toe shoes, especially in areas with dense mosquito populations.
  • Eliminate Standing Water: Regularly empty and clean containers that can collect water, Like bird baths, flower pots, pitchers, and gutters, to reduce mosquito breeding sites around your home. That’s right, folks! It’s time to get that month-old glass of stale water by your bed outta there!
  • Install or Repair Screens: Ensure your windows and doors have screens in good condition to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. These can really make all the difference, especially during those hot summer months when you’d like a nice breeze in your house without having to fend off a little blood-sucking demon at the same time.
