Why Am I Scared of Bugs?

The fear or discomfort that comes from the presence of bugs is a common feeling for many people. Several bugs commonly evoke fear such as spiders, cockroaches, wasps, bed bugs, crickets, and many others. Though most bugs can be eliminated by simply stepping on them or capturing them and releasing them outside, it doesn’t reduce the fear that oftentimes comes.

If you find yourself with an intense and irrational fear of insects, you may be experiencing entomophobia. Entomophobia is a specific phobia that may result in anxiety, panic attacks, or extreme distress when confronted with or thinking of bugs. Entomophobia can lead a person to avoidance behaviors and heightened or obsessive thoughts.

If you are experiencing entomophobia, consider seeking a therapist for help. Treatments commonly include cognitive-behavioral therapy and exposure therapy. Exposure therapy can help you learn that most bugs are not out to harm you and are safe and amazing creatures.

Even though bugs are mainly beneficial to our ecosystem, they can still come across as intimidating and unpredictable. Fears of bugs most commonly stem from their behaviors and characteristics, such as stinging, bug bites, and their unpredictability.

Some common misconceptions and myths surround pests. While some insects can harm you, most bugs mind their own business and are more focused on scourging food and water. Here are some common misconceptions and myths surrounding pests that contribute to people’s fears:

  • All spiders are venomous. While all spiders contain venom, most of them do not affect humans and most spiders do not bite humans. Only a few species of spiders are venomous towards humans – the black widow spider and the brown recluse spider.
  • Wasps are always aggressive. Based on the media or other exaggerated stories, many people believe that bees and wasps are naturally aggressive and will sting humans for no reason. Wasps and bees are typically defensive rather than aggressive. Wasps and bees will generally only sting when they feel threatened or feel the need to defend their colony or themselves.
  • All Ticks Transmit Lyme Disease. There are only a few specific species of ticks that carry Lyme disease. While it is still important to properly remove ticks that you come in contact with, it is not true that every tick you come in contact with has the potential to transmit Lyme disease.

Most species of insects are unharmful towards humans and most insect bites do nothing more than the standard inflammation and itching. Most pest misconceptions and myths stem from exaggerated portrayals in media and lead to false perceptions of the real threats posed by these bugs.
